Enrichment classes are introduced to all children, termly, in Y1 and Y2 irrespective of their ability, to grow their appetite for learning that stimulates their critical thinking, understanding and creativity. KS1 pupils undertake a variety of activities involving Maths and Literacy. In Maths, we do activities which stimulate curious minds; involving statistics, patterns and shapes in order to develop mathematical flexibility through geometry. In Literacy, we use stimulating picture prompts to make stories, enhancing lateral thinking to expand creative writing skills as well as playing challenging games, using a range of vocabulary within a story.
When children move to KS2, Enrichment sessions are offered to children chosen by their class teacher based on their formative and summative assessment. Enrichment sessions become more challenging, involving deeper knowledge of core subjects and other subjects too. For KS2 Enrichment, tasks are more project and research based encouraging children to be thoroughly involved in investigations. These lead to in-depth discussions with peers, encouraging learners to work as a team. For example: Last year we studied Politics and explored UK Government and How the Parliament Works. This led to some great discussions among group members. We also worked on a theme park, working as a group, encouraged teamwork, collaboration, decision-making skills, thinking skills and recap of previously taught Maths and Literacy skills in a meaningful context. Last Spring, we worked on Business Apprentice which included an enterprise project for the group consisting of a series of age-appropriate, business-based tasks that focussed on sales, advertising, branding and building towards product invention and interviews.
