Juniors (Years 3 to 6)

In the Junior Department, Years 3 to 6, with average class sizes of 18, pupils benefit from our successful mix of modern and traditional teaching methods. The children increase their understanding and application of the key subjects of Literacy, Numeracy and Science, while expanding their knowledge of French, History, Geography, Current Affairs, Information Communication Technology, Music, Drama and Art. Specialist teaching is offered in Drama, Music, PE/Sports and French. Rigorous practice in verbal and non-verbal reasoning, increasingly an integral part of secondary selection, is also on the weekly time-table. While Ashton House School upholds traditional values, we nevertheless fully embrace modern technology with a full class bank of Chrome Books readily available and interactive whiteboards throughout the school. Pupils learn to use Google Docs and our comprehensive e-Safety curriculum encourages pupils to be responsible users of online resources.

The progress of all children is regularly monitored and pupils in Years 1 to 6 are tested internally in the autumn and spring terms. Towards the end of the summer term the children take external NFER standardised tests in Literacy and Numeracy which enable the teachers to track their progress. Parents are advised of end of year test results in the annual report.

Regular educational trips, including residential journeys for Years 4 to 6, are used to stimulate the children and to increase their independence, confidence and practical awareness. We are able to take full advantage of the wonderful amenities on offer in the London area and further afield.

Once they have completed the Junior curriculum, our children are extremely well-equipped to progress confidently to the next stage of their education. Our results and the feedback we receive from parents and senior schools are both outstanding.
